Project Objectives:
Sursum Corda, a historic African American neighborhood in Washington DC, grapples with disinvestment and housing affordability challenges, yet remains resilient in preserving its identity.
The Perry School, established in 1880 for African American children, now acts as a community center and nonprofit hub, aiming to expand its outreach.
The proposed Harmony Haven affordable housing project seeks to connect the Perry School and a nearby park by pedestrianizing a southern road.
Design strategies include elevating the building to create a seamless path, optimizing solar gain, and fostering interaction through doubly loaded corridors.
An atrium space addresses the lack of natural light, while modular construction aids flexibility. The design integrates community spaces, promoting engagement and empowerment within Sursum Corda, creating a vibrant, inclusive environment.
